Participants will examine and attempt to understand the thought processes of two compulsive gamblers through the use of film study. James Caan (The Gambler, 1974)  and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Owning Mahony, 2003), portray compulsive gamblers who make choices that seem abnormal to most people; but to the compulsive gambler, those decisions appear to be very normal and rational. OASAS recently established the initial parameters of a state-administered gambling credential program. As envisioned, this credentialing program will seek to recognize qualified compulsive gambling professionals who work within the OASAS service delivery system, as well as in mental health settings to promote essential knowledge and skills, and assure quality care. The program will include a stand alone credential for individuals currently employed (or pursuing careers) in the gambling treatment field. It will also offer a specialty designation for CASACs and CPPs seeking to expand their expertise and professional scope of practice.

Suicide Prevention

This three hour course will train participants to function as a positive link for someone in crisis. The first part of the training looks at the biological, psychological, and environmental factors which put youth at risk and the current prevalence of depression and suicide in today’s youth. The second part of the training examines protective measures that can be taken to allow young people access to help during a crisis and procedures for responding to youth seeking help. This training is recommended for anyone working with youth.

3 R's for Adult Children of Alcoholics

This course heightens understanding of the dynamics of rules, roles and results of life in an alcoholic home and equips helpers with tools to address the negative aspects that befall efforts in relationships for these individuals. It describes the roles of family members, illustrates "The Rules," and interprets the results on adulthood. Characteristics of a healthy family are provided while outlining a system to develop plans to identify personal needs for increasing the ability to engage in healthy relationships.

Understanding Trauma: The Connection between Trauma and Addiction

This training will address untreated childhood and adult trauma as a primary cause of addiction and relapse. The participant will understand how a pain-filled inner world seeks relief in substances, food, or behaviors such as sexual acting out, gambling, frenetic activity or compulsive overwork. The nature of trauma will be explored . . . how it attaches itself to our inner being and how emotional intelligence and resilience can be our best defense against slipping into a place with no way out.

Grandparenting Gambling Specialty Designation

$200.00 per person

The Chautauqua Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Council will be offering the required 15 hours of Treatment and 15 hours of Prevention coursework that is necessary to receive this Gambling Specialty Designation Credential through the grandparenting process. This training will only be available this summer. If you are interested in attending this 15 hour grandparenting training, contact Kathleen Colby-Leonard ASAP.

Criteria for qualifying for the Grandparenting certification are as follows:

This particular course is for those who work in either treatment or prevention and are already credentialed by New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. It is a 90-day grandparenting opportunity for NYS CASAC's and CPP's.

Applicants for the CASAC Gambling Specialty Designation must:

• Be a current CASAC in good standing for a minimum of five years;
• Attest to having a minimum of five years of appropriate work experience as a provider of alcoholism and substance abuse treatment and/or gambling addiction services; and
• Attest to having completed 15 clock hours of appropriate gambling training

Applicants for the CPP Gambling Specialty Designation must:

• Be a current CPP in good standing;
• Attest to having a minimum of five years of appropriate work experience as a provider of alcoholism and substance abuse and/or gambling prevention services; and
• Attest to having completed 15 clock hours of appropriate gambling training

For those who do not qualify for the Grandparenting certification . . .

We are also offering OASAS Compulsive Gambling Certification Training Applicable towards 60 Treatment hours or 30 Prevention hours on July 12, 19, 26, August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30.
