awareness theatre (AT)
A prevention education program designed to use theatre and student volunteers as a means for promoting an understanding of topics important to today’s youth. Delivery methods include improvisational scenes, role-plays, children’s theatre, original plays, music pieces and storytelling. There is a very wide variety of topics available including Alcoholism and the Family, Drinking and Dating, How to Help a Friend, Unexpected Problems with Drinking & Drugging and much more. Presentations can be developed to meet individual needs and are offered to small and large groups of any age and in any setting.
Awareness Theatre is a prevention program of the Chautauqua Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Council. It began in 1985 as a way to educate local youth to the risks of alcohol and other drug use and abuse. The use of peer presenters would make young people more receptive to the lessons, and the use of theatrical scenes and skits would help hold youth’s attention. Interactive presentations with the youth presenters allows audience members to ask the questions as well as making the lessons more memorable. This type of presentation seems to be more effective in reaching the various learning styles of young people.
Most presentations are school prevention education pieces, others include agency trainings, parent education and training, community awareness, teacher trainings, fundraising efforts, and community involvement events. These last efforts not only provide the community with knowledge of the group’s efforts and recognition of its participation in the community, it also provides the volunteers with a connection to the community and helps them understand that connection and its value.
Rates: Fees vary depending on circumstances.
